2015 Annual Meeting, Brown Bags, Updates

December 2015 - RPFSS Annual Meeting

The Real Property and Financial Services Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association held its Annual Meeting and buffet lunch from Noon to 1:30 pm on Thursday, December 10, 2015, at the Plaza Club, Crown Room, 900 Fort Street Mall, 20th Floor. Followed by an optional tour for those who register.

GUEST SPEAKER: PAUL WOOLFORD FROM HOK AND JOE FERRARO OF FERRARO CHOI AND ASSOCIATES

We are pleased to inform you that our guest speaker will be Paul Woolford, AIA, IIDA, LEED® AP BD+C, at HOK, a global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm, and Joe Ferraro, co-founder of Ferraro Choi and Associates, a leading sustainable design architectural, interior design and research firm.

Mr. Woolford, together with Mr. Ferraro, designed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center at Pearl Harbor. The LEED Gold sustainable design is the most environmentally innovative national historic landmark in the United States. It involves significant adaptive reuse of two historic World War II era aircraft hangars, drawing inspiration from the ecology of Hawaii. The building’s sustainable features include a skylight diffuser system that virtually eliminates the need for artificial light during the day and a gray water capturing system that flushes toilets and irrigates the native landscaping. Honolulu’s first Passive Cooling system eliminates the need for conventional mechanical cooling and air conveyance. A hydronic system pulls water from deep below the seabed into chilled coils atop the roof of the building. There, the prevailing sea breezes pass over these cool coils and create a system of natural ventilation that drops the cooled, fresh air supply into vertical “thermal chimneys” and through a displacement system of raised floors. The result is a building that ventilates its public and private spaces using no mechanical fans and using 100 percent outside air.

OPTIONAL TOUR OF DANIEL K. INOUYE REGIONAL CENTER

For those who are interested, we have arranged a group tour of the Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center following the Annual Meeting.
